3. Reduce headaches and neck pain caused by TMJ

Many people don't realize that jaw tension can trigger headaches and neck pain. Our physiotherapy treatments target the root cause of TMJ issues to help reduce or eliminate secondary pain symptoms like headaches, earaches and neck stiffness. We'll provide exercises and self-care tips to help keep your jaw healthy and pain-free long-term.

4. Get back to your normal daily routine

We know TMJ pain and stiffness can throw your life out of whack. Our goal is to help you get back to doing the things you love as quickly and comfortably as possible. Our therapists will create a personalized treatment plan focused on your specific symptoms, lifestyle and goals. We'll work with you to develop strategies to manage your jaw condition and minimize future flare-ups.

Here are some ways in which physiotherapy can be beneficial for TMJ dysfunction:

  1. Education: We will educate you about the anatomy and function of the TMJ, contributing factors to TMJ dysfunction, and strategies to manage symptoms. Understanding how to maintain proper jaw mechanics in daily activities is essential.

  2. Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques, such as massage, joint mobilization, and myofascial release, may be used to alleviate muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and reduce pain in the TMJ and surrounding structures.

  3. Exercises: Specific exercises are prescribed to strengthen and stretch the muscles involved in jaw movement. This may include exercises for the jaw, neck, and shoulders to improve overall posture and reduce strain on the TMJ.

  4. Stretching Techniques: Gentle stretching techniques can help improve flexibility in the jaw muscles and surrounding tissues, promoting optimal range of motion.

  5. Posture Correction: Addressing posture issues that contribute to TMJ dysfunction is an important aspect of physiotherapy. Poor neck and upper back posture can impact the TMJ, and physiotherapists at Revival Physio will provide you guidance on maintaining proper alignment.

  6. Biofeedback: Biofeedback techniques may be used to help you become more aware of jaw clenching or teeth grinding habits. This awareness allows you to consciously work on reducing these behaviours.

  7. Relaxation Techniques: Stress and tension often contribute to TMJ issues. We may teach relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation, to help manage stress and reduce tension in the jaw muscles.

  8. Acupuncture: may be used to alleviate pain and promote muscle relaxation in the TMJ area.

  9. Lifestyle and Ergonomic Advice: Physiotherapists at Revival Physio will provide guidance on lifestyle modifications and ergonomic adjustments to prevent or reduce activities that aggravate TMJ symptoms.

  10. Gradual Progression: Treatment plans are often designed to progress gradually as the patient improves. This may involve advancing exercises, incorporating more functional activities, and monitoring changes in symptoms over time.

At Revival Physio, we aim to individualize the treatment to you; to help you conservatively manage your TMJ symptoms without just relying on your night guard or botox injections.
